Still doesn't touch a brush gun though, and ammo isn't scarce at all if you know where to look, or how to make them. Its actually not to bad with hand load ammo and the cowboy perk. But I recently picked up the unique version of the cowboy repeater, and it comes with a scope. I always go for the Brush Gun at level 16, for a rifle. I'm about to swap for the All-American, but this gun has lasted me 30 levels, essentially all of vanilla. The lack of a scope is a bit of a drag, but I've made quite a few decent shots with this weapon. Just for the heck of it, I took it out to do some sniping. Fully modded you have a decent rate of fire, decent capacity for a rifle (11), and would only be 3.5lbs (if that mod worked). It also has a bit of a crit bonus on top of it.
With hand loads, you're doing 40 damage (with -3DT on top), 50 if you take cowboy (though that perk has some steep requirements). I've actually used this gun for most of the game so far (I'm level 32ish). You'll also need to fire up New Vegas through Steam or GOG the regular way once for xNVSE's loader to work.I hear a lot of talk about sniper rifles, AMRs, etc., but I haven't heard much about the Cowboy Repeater. I recommend making a shortcut of this file and putting it on your desktop. NOTE: For xNVSE to take effect, you'll need to launch New Vegas with the nvse_loader.exe file that comes with this mod. This mod extends the scripting capabilities of the vanilla game, which is necessary for making many popular mods work. Next up, you'll want the newest version of the New Vegas Script Extender, or xNVSE. If desired, you can override LOOT's optimization to make manual tweaks to your load order yourself (this shouldn't be necessary for the mods in this list). This program automatically reorganizes your load order to make it as stable as possible. A great tool to pair with your mod manager is the Load Order Optimization Tool, or LOOT. This will allow New Vegas to read and accept any texture mods you install (we'll get to those later). Then go to Settings > Workarounds > BSA Redirection and toggle it. After installing it, log in, and select New Vegas as the game you're modding. The best example is the Great Khans, in Fallout and Fallout 2 they had a solid list of weapons and armour. Various NPCs and certain factions all use a standard loadout of armour, and weapons that are a bit disappointing and lack diversity. I highly recommend Vortex since it has a great UI and is very easy to use. Fallout New Vegas is a great game.but some of it's levelled lists aren't that great. These tools automatically handle most mods' installation, so you don't have to dig around in-game files - simply drag-and-drop compressed mod files, and the mod manager will do the rest.
